I have never blogged before, so excused my poor blogging etiquette. In fact, I don't like blogs, I find them annoying. No one cares about the thoughts preceding you tying a perfect bow or what your husband and you did the day you iced that lemon cake with blueberry frosting. My blog, however, will be about important shit. Like life, politics, worldly views, and the like. Stuff that actually matters. I should forewarn, that I am absolutely awful at being consistent, so you will likely see that I will "blog" when I feel the need for such an emotional outlet. Basically this is my therapy and today's topic is politics and my family, thus the inspiration for my blog... name? Is that what it is called? I digress. Let us get to the meat.

My Family

Whoa, what a heavy topic for me to start out on. For brevity I will give you the short and to the point facts about my family.
Fact 1: My family is from the country. I mean, rusted cars in the yard, butter tubs for bowls, mice in the walls country.
Fact 2: Being from such a rural area, the education is on the lacking side in my family. This is not meant as an insult, but when you consistently spell "just" as "jus" or when you believe "cousin" ends in "t", you have to wonder if there was any spelling education.
Fact 3: My family was never religious or political.
Fact 4: My uncles are pill pushing, fringe of society dwelling, irresponsible,  system leachers. Well, at least three out of the four. My mother is willing to do anything for some of her family members, including a select few of her brothers.

My Mother and Politics

Now, my mother always raised me to be accepting of everyone, and I believed for a long time that she was the reason why I was so open-minded. However, something happened around the time I entered college. She began seeing her high school sweetheart, a die-hard military man since the age of 18, and ending up marrying him last year. This is when I began to notice her shift into conservatism... listening to Rush Limbaugh, watching Fox news, and making snide, baseless comments on my beliefs and views.  I, being both Atheist and Liberal, have tried to contain my astonishment and disagreement because, well I just assume my mother is ill-informed and being fed information from her twice retired from the military husband.  But the icing on the cake was today. I present you the conversation, slightly provoked by myself.

Mom: "So, they shut down the commissary on base today."
Me (shamefully provoking): "Well you know who's fault it is."
Mom: "OBAMA. His fucking healthcare."
Me: "No, your Republicans... the present issue has nothing to do with the healthcare."
Mom:" Well you know you will be taken off our insurance soon because of HIS healthcare."
Me: "No, actually I stay on until I am 26."
Mom: "Well, you get reduced benefits!"
Me: "No, I don't think this is actually true."
Mom (caught in her misinformed corner): "I know! I am just trying to get your goat. I don't know what I am talking about."
Me: "I know, I think you are misinformed."
Mom: "I am misinformed?!?! Why did you vote for Obama anyway?! Because he is black!?!?"
Me: "No, because I believe in his social policies and his plan for healthcare. We are the only industrialized nation without universal healthcare and I believe in equality. People should marry who they want."
Mom: "Because he believes in gay marriage?! Do you know he did not support gay marriage in the first election?!"
Me: "Yes, I know, he had to appeal to everyone or else he wouldn't win."
Mom: "So you support LIARS?! The president is a liar! Is that who you want for a president?!"
Me: "All politicians lie. Your politicians don't lie?"
Mom: "I got to go. I want to spend time with my husband before he has to work for the government and not get paid."

Final Thoughts

This, my dear friends, is the logic I deal with. If you are asking yourself, Jesica, where is this logic you speak of? I cannot find it. Well dear friends, that is because there is none. My mother is being fed information from her husband, who has hundreds of thousands of dollars saved from his military job. Her husband who receives endless discounts, including no down payment on their prestine log cabin on forty acres on a river. Yet, for some reason my mother fails to see that her roots, this country family and her daughters in college, benefit from liberal agendas... such as universal healthcare and social welfare programs. This is not the mother I grew up with. And it is infuriating. Now that my wine buzz has worn off and thus my alcohol-driven anger, I end this blog with a positive note... white chocolate chips are delicious.
